About Us:
Help the Afghan Children (HTAC) is a non-profit, non-partisan, national organization that was established in 1993 in response to the dire conditions faced by Afghan families during Afghanistan’s civil war. HTAC was officially registered in 2005 with Afghanistan’s Ministry of Economy as a national non-governmental organization (registration # 261). HTAC is also a member of the ACBAR coordination body in Afghanistan. HTAC is governed by an independent Board of Directors, which sets the overall direction and priorities of the organization and its development programs. At HTAC, we have been providing continuous educational, livelihood, child protection, relief, and humanitarian support to Afghan families and communities for over 30 years. We are committed to educating, protecting, and empowering a new generation of Afghan children to become proud, productive citizens and future leaders of their country. HTAC’s main office is located in Kabul, with sub-offices in Balkh, Jawzjan, and Sar-e-Pul provinces.
Our Thematic Focus Areas
HTAC is committed to ensuring every child in Afghanistan has access to quality education, regardless of their circumstances. Through Community-Based Education (CBE), we bring learning opportunities to children in remote areas who cannot attend formal schools due to insecurity or distance. Our Accelerated Learning Programs (ALP) support young people whose education was disrupted, helping them catch up and reintegrate into the formal system. Peace Education is a cornerstone of our approach, teaching children non-violent conflict resolution and fostering a culture of respect and cooperation. To enhance the quality of education, we invest in teacher training programs that equip educators with modern teaching methods, moving away from outdated and ineffective practices. Additionally, our literacy initiatives, such as the “Read Afghanistan” program, empower students with the skills they need to thrive, significantly improving literacy rates among Afghan children
Protecting children from harm and ensuring their well-being is at the heart of HTAC’s mission. We work to strengthen child protection systems at the community and district levels by engaging families, schools, and local authorities in creating a safer environment for children. Our programs aim to prevent violence, including child labor and early marriage, by raising awareness and advocating for policy changes. We provide psychosocial support and establish safe spaces where vulnerable children can heal, learn, and grow without fear. Through continuous engagement with stakeholders, we advocate for children's rights, working to ensure that every child in Afghanistan is protected, valued, and given the opportunity to reach their full potential.
Since 2002, Help the Afghan Children (HTAC) has been dedicated to empowering vulnerable Afghan communities through vocational skills development, fostering self-reliance and sustainable livelihoods in a nation grappling with instability and economic hardship. Our programs target marginalized groups, including women and youth, equipping them with practical skills in trades such as mobile repairing, carpentry, tailoring, and bag making-skills tailored to meet local market demands and unlock economic opportunities. By bridging the gap between education and employment, we enable individuals to support their families, contribute to community development, and rebuild Afghanistan’s socio-economic fabric. Rooted in inclusivity and resilience, our vocational initiatives prioritize long-term impact, empowering participants to break cycles of poverty and become agents of change in their societies.
In times of crisis, HTAC provides life-saving support to families in need, ensuring access to food, medicine, and essential supplies. We work with displaced families and communities affected by conflict and natural disasters, delivering emergency relief and long-term recovery assistance. Our efforts also include helping children obtain electronic ID cards, a critical step in securing their basic rights and access to education, healthcare, and other essential services. Through partnerships with international humanitarian organizations, we continue to expand our reach, responding to emergencies and supporting the most vulnerable populations with dignity and care.
